Four university friends, Alex, Ben, Chloe, and Daisy, are chatting at a cafe. They are discussing their plans for the upcoming summer vacation.
Alex: Hey everyone, thanks for meeting up today. The semester is almost over, and we really need to finalize our plans for the summer vacation. If we don’t book things soon, everything will be sold out.
Ben: I can’t believe it’s already July. The years have just flown by, haven’t they? I feel like we just started our freshman year. Anyway, I’m so ready for a break from all these assignments, presentations, and exams.
Chloe: ( 1 ). I spent all night studying for that history test yesterday, and I feel completely exhausted. I definitely need some time to relax, recharge, and forget about academic stuff for a while.
Daisy: So, what’s the plan? Are we still thinking about going on a big trip together, or doing something locally? We’ve been talking about this for weeks but haven’t decided anything.
Alex: Well, I was looking into some volunteer programs abroad. There’s a really great project in Thailand where we could help build a local school and teach English to young kids. It would look amazing on our resumes, and it’s a great way to give back.
Ben: That sounds like a wonderful experience, Alex, but ( 2 ). Flights to Thailand are pretty expensive right now, especially during the summer peak season. Plus, I’ve been trying to save up for a new laptop for next semester. I don’t think I can afford an overseas trip this year.
Chloe: I’m in the same boat as Ben. My part-time job hasn’t been giving me many shifts lately, so my budget is pretty tight. What if we do something closer to home? We don’t have to travel halfway across the world to have a good time together.
Daisy: How about a road trip? We could rent a car and drive down the coast. We could camp near the beach, have barbecues, and go surfing or swimming. It would be way cheaper than flying anywhere, and we’d have total freedom to stop wherever we want.
Alex: Camping? I don’t know… I’m not really a big fan of sleeping in tents, dealing with bugs, and not having a proper shower. I usually prefer staying somewhere with a comfortable bed and air conditioning.
Chloe: Oh, come on, Alex. ( 3 ). It’ll be a great adventure! You’ve been working so hard; a little bit of nature will be good for you. Plus, we can split the cost of gas, campsite fees, and groceries, so it will be super affordable for everyone.
Ben: Actually, I really like Daisy’s idea. I haven’t been to the beach in ages, and I’d love to get out of the city. We could even stop by some national parks along the way and do a bit of hiking.
Alex: Okay, okay. You guys win. I guess I can survive a few nights in a tent if we’re all together. But if it rains heavily, I’m booking the nearest hotel room, and I’m not paying for it alone!
Daisy: Deal! Now, we just need to figure out the exact transportation. Does anyone have a car we can use, or do we definitely need to rent one?
Ben: My older brother might let us borrow his SUV. It’s quite spacious and perfect for a road trip with four people and all our gear. I’ll have to ask him very nicely, though. He’s very protective of his car.
Chloe: That would be awesome and save us a lot of money! If he says no, we can always look for cheap rental deals online. ( 4 ).
Alex: Right. While you look into the car situation, I’ll start researching campsites along the coast. We should probably book our spots in advance because campgrounds get full very quickly in August.
Daisy: Good idea. Oh, by the way, I was thinking we should also plan a strict budget for the trip. We need to make sure we don’t end up spending more than we can afford on food, drinks, and activities.
Ben: Definitely. Let’s create a shared spreadsheet online where we can track all our estimated expenses and see who pays for what.
Chloe: Sounds like a solid plan. I’m getting really excited about this trip now! ( 5 )?
Alex: Well, our final exams end on the 20th, so how about we leave on the 25th? That gives us a few days to pack, buy supplies, and get everything ready without rushing.
