Read each passage and choose the best answer from among the four choices for each question.
The Silent Invaders
In recent years, many researchers have turned their attention to plants that appear harmless but cause major problems when introduced to new places. These plants, often called “invasive species,” can quickly spread across forests, farms, and even urban areas, taking over land and making it hard for native plants to grow. One reason they are difficult to control is that they often grow faster and taller than local species, blocking sunlight and using up nutrients in the soil. In some cases, these plants were brought into new environments on purpose—perhaps for use in gardens or to prevent soil erosion—but ended up spreading much more than expected. Over time, scientists have realized that controlling them once they take hold can be extremely difficult and expensive.
To understand how serious the issue is, scientists have studied the impact of invasive plants on different parts of the environment. In many regions, native animals are losing their homes and sources of food as these fast-growing species change the local ecosystem. For example, when a large plant covers a field where small flowering plants used to grow, insects that depend on those flowers may disappear. This can affect birds and other animals that feed on the insects, creating a chain reaction throughout the area. The problem does not stop with plants and animals. In some places, the growth of these plants even increases the risk of wildfires or floods by changing how water flows or how much dry material builds up on the ground. Because of this, some experts believe invasive plants may be one of the biggest threats to nature in many countries.
Stopping these invaders is not easy. Once they begin to grow across a large area, they can be extremely hard to remove. Pulling them out by hand can take a long time and must often be repeated many times, while using chemicals may cause other problems for the environment. In addition, some people in the area may not even realize the danger. A plant may look beautiful and grow easily in gardens, so homeowners might continue to plant it without knowing it harms nearby natural areas. One study found that many invasive plants sold at garden centers were still being recommended as “good choices” for local landscaping. For this reason, some scientists argue that the best way to protect nature is through more public education and stronger rules that prevent the sale or use of these plants before they become a problem.
(1) The idea that invasive plants are hard to manage is supported by the fact that
- many of them are colorful and attractive, which makes people want to keep planting them.
- their seeds are often eaten by local birds, which helps them spread farther than native species.
- some of them grow taller and faster than local plants, which allows them to take over space more easily.
- they usually stay in one area for years before they cause damage, making them difficult to notice in time.
(2) The spread of invasive plants can harm entire ecosystems because
- the loss of native plants affects animals that depend on them, leading to a chain of environmental changes.
- certain animals may use these new plants for shelter, which can sometimes reduce the number of native insects.
- water in the area becomes too polluted to support life, especially in smaller rivers and mountain streams.
- other plants have to grow more quickly to survive, which causes them to become more aggressive and dangerous.
(3) According to the passage, what is one reason invasive plants continue to spread in many places?
- People often plant them without knowing that they are harmful, especially if the plants are cheap and easy to grow.
- Governments have already banned the sale of these plants in stores, but local farmers keep growing them secretly.
- Even after they are removed from one area, the seeds often cannot grow again for many years.
- Invasive plants usually live deep in forests where they are less likely to be noticed and reported by the public.
